- 2 - PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC IN THE CHURCH
I. Purpose
A. To exalt God through praise, worship, and thanksgiving (Psalm 66:4; 92:1-2; 150)
B. To communicate God’s truth
1. So that believers can be edified (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16) 2. So that unbelievers can be evangelized (Psalm 40:3; 96:1-4; Acts 16:25-32)
II. Guidelines
A. It’s words must be biblically accurate and clear in their implications
B. It’s musical style must be appropriate to the situation in which it is used
C. It’s musical style must communicate to the local culture— realizing that a multi-cultural mix characterizes our assembly, and having concern for all members, a variety in musical styles is essential for accomplishing our purposes
III. Participants (those who minister publicly)
A. They must be a member, associate member, or approved by the Elders
B. They must be blameless, showing the heart of a servant
C. They must be musically competent and prepared
